 The term social media refers to a computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through virtual networks and communities. Social media is internet-based and gives users quick electronic communication of content, such as personal information, documents, videos, and photos. Users engage with social media via a computer, tablet, or smartphone via web-based software or applications. While social media is ubiquitous in America and Europe, Asian countries like Indonesia lead the list of social media usage. More than 4.9 billion people use social media, as of October 2021.

Social media has both advantages and disadvantages not only for peoples day-to-day lives but also for businesses. It provides a plae for businesses to advertise about themselves and in some cases try sway pubilc opinion about them. For normal peoples everyday lives it helps them with connectivity, education, information and updates, awareness to certain events, mental health and noble causes. There are also the advantages to businesses such as brand reputation, brand awareness and customer interaction.

But as there are advantages there must be disadvantages. For peoples everday lives these can be decrease in social cognitive skills, lack of quality family time, lack of thoughtfullness or empathy and being present physically but not mentally. There are also the disadvantages with businesses and social media such as it may facilitate laziness within the workplace, hacking accounts, distracting employees and decrease in face-to-face communication skills.

On average a person interacts with 6.6 social media platforms daily. Millenials and Gen Z being the most frequent users of social media. 54% of Gen Z are said to spend at least 4 hours daily on social media and almost 38% spend more time than that. Youtube being the most-used social media platform for this generation with 88% of people in Gen Z using it.

On the other hand 79% of Millenials use multiple social media accounts every day which is increasing year to year. Facebook being the most used platform with 78% of the generation accessing the site with youtube as a close second at 77%. Millenials are starting to spend more time on social media whereas Gen Z is starting to spend less.
